Delays for Inclement Weather Process

Fog and ice delays are common during the Fall and Winter months.  Our process for delays start around 4:00am.  No less than three people are checking weather conditions in various parts of the district.  We use state and local weather forecasts as well as local radar and temperature readings.  A determination is made  by comparing our conditions with what neighboring districts are seeing as well.  We try to have a decision made by 5:15am at the latest.  Once a decision is made, we send an automated call out to notify families.  Please make sure your contact information is accurate.

Delay Transportation Information:

If a delay is needed, the district will operate on a two-hour delay, with school start times beginning two hours later than usual; breakfast and morning Pre-K will not be held.

In the instance of a 2-hour delay, students and staff will report two (2) hours later than their normal start time.  The same is true for bus pick-up times.  For instance, if your bus is scheduled to pick-up at 6:00am, the 2-hour delay pick-up time is 8:00am.

Inclement Weather Plan

To prepare Milford School District families for the potential of inclement weather this upcoming winter season, we would like to provide some specific information describing how instruction will continue should school closures be announced for SY 25-26.

Day 1 of school closure due to inclement weather:
This day will be considered as a traditional ‘snow day’ when students do not report to school and there are no required learning activities.

Day 2 and subsequent days of school closure for the same weather event:
● The Milford School District will transition to asynchronous instruction.
● Should schools be open for employees, teachers will provide updates, reminders, and learning expectations to students and families using our standard communication platforms. Please ensure that you are familiar with the communication platform your student’s teacher(s) uses such as Schoology, Talking Points, or others.

Asynchronous Learning Details:
● There will not be any live instruction or synchronous activities during any school closure.
● Students in grades K-6 will bring home a paper-based learning packet designated to use for asynchronous learning at the beginning of each month starting with January and February. Packets for subsequent months will be sent home based on the forecast for any major weather events that could result in the closure of school.
● Students in grades 7-12 will receive their designated assignments through Schoology.
● In addition to these activities, families are encouraged to have their student read a book for a minimum of 30 minutes each day. This could be independent reading or having another family member read to your student, but in all cases, engaging directly with text is the best way to build upon reading and comprehension skills.

Additional Information:
● The purpose of this plan is to prioritize the safety of students and staff while ensuring that learning continues during extended closures.
● Information on school closures and the transition to asynchronous learning as needed will be communicated as quickly as possible through the District’s standard communication outlets including Talking Points and Infinite Campus in addition to social media accounts.
● If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school or teacher(s).

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we make decisions using up-to-date weather and safety information made available for each forecasted event this winter.
