English Language Arts (ELA)
Milford School District is committed to teaching students to read and write. Reading is often considered one of the most valuable tools students learn as they grow, progress, and build the foundation for lifelong learning. Our reading instruction focuses on phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students receive exposure to a range of text types and tasks in order to develop these skills and foster their love of reading. As students refine their skills as readers they progress into the area of writing. The ability to write well is critical to our students as they advance into their post-secondary and career options. Student writing includes the opportunity to demonstrate increasing sophistication in all aspects of language and vocabulary use as they apply what they have learned. We believe the ability to read and write not only prepares our students to be successful throughout the rest of their educational career, but also helps develop them as responsible citizens in our society. We use the Common Core Literacy Standards as our guide.
Milford School District is committed to educating the whole child. This includes not only growing our students academically, but also ensuring they learn and practice healthy habits that can be developed over their lifetime. We use the following standards established by the State of Delaware and the National Health Standards to help guide our instruction:
Milford School District offers Library / Media opportunities and access in every school to support student learning. Our students are also able to explore the resources provided by the University of Delaware known as UDLibSearch.
Milford School District uses the Common Core Math Standards and guiding Mathematical Practices to provide a foundation in developing essential mathematical habits of mind with our students. The Mathematical Practices include:
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
4. Model with mathematics
5. Use appropriate tools strategically
6. Attend to precision
7. Look for and make use of structure
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Milford School District’s Physical Education program is designed to continue to support our approach to educating the whole child. Our programming works to provide students with developmentally appropriate and personally challenging program that advances the knowledge, confidence, and motivation needed to engage in a lifelong, healthy, active lifestyle. Physical Education provides students with opportunities to learn motor skills, develop fitness, work alongside others and gain understanding about the importance of physical activity while practicing and refining their skills.
The abilities of a physically literate individual include demonstrating competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns:
- applying knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance;
- demonstrating the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness;
- exhibiting responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others;
- recognizing the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction
State of Delaware Physical Education Standards Shape America
We believe in providing our students with inquiry-based learning opportunities to explore the world around them. This includes providing students with hands on learning opportunities that are guided by the Next Generation Science Standards. These standards help guide us in ensuring we approach our science instruction so it involves a full understanding of the basic science concepts, along with science and engineering practices and cross-cutting concepts that span multiple science contents.
Milford School District’s Social Studies program is designed to help our students become informed and active participants in our community and greater democratic society. This includes being an active citizen, understanding one’s rights, and understanding the historical events that have shaped our government and larger society today. The social studies curriculum is driven by the Delaware State Standards for Social Studies and focuses on building the capacities in students which include content knowledge, critical thinking skills and active citizen participation.
Milford School District continues to provide Spanish instruction through our World Language Immersion program as well as through course offerings at Milford Senior High School. The fundamental purpose of exposure to world language is to help equip our students with the skills to communicate in a new language in a culturally appropriate way while also helping to develop our students understanding of living and working in a global community. Students learning to appreciate other cultures and world views and understand the unique ways of living help make up the diversity we celebrate in our world and, uniquely, within our greater Milford Community.
