Superintendent's Message
Welcome to the Milford School District, a District that consistently strives for excellence in academics for each and every student from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. This commitment is reflected in our mission statement:
"The mission of Milford School District is to ensure that all students receive a comprehensive, personalized and quality education in a safe, supportive learning environment where students can gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that will enable each of them to achieve success in their life pursuits."
Milford School District is located in the geographic center of the state of Delaware and has the Delaware Bay as its eastern boundary. The School District encompasses 166 square miles of flatland, with numerous freshwater lakes dotting the area. Most of the land is utilized in various agribusiness enterprises. Total population for Milford School District is approximately 20,000 with a student population of approximately 4,200 for grades PreK-12.
Our District boasts exemplary performance on the Delaware State Testing Program for the past ten years. The new Delaware Comprehensive Assessment System (DCAS) was instituted this past school year for grades 2 - 10 in both reading and math. Milford School District students continue to shine as they outscore their state counterparts in every grade and on every assessment. For the 2011-12 school year, Morris Early Childhood Center will implement a full day kindergarten program that will allow teachers more time to lay a strong foundation for students. When they go on to the first grade at Ross, Benjamin Banneker or Mispillion Elementary Schools, students will receive top notch instruction that will prepare them to move on to the next level. In addition, Ross Elementary School and Banneker Elementary School have both been recognized as National Distinguished Title One Schools and Banneker was ranked Superior in the last school year. Milford Middle School continues to produce excellence in academics as they prepare students for high school. In the past school year, 2010-2011, we opened a new school, the Milford Central Academy, equipped with state of the art technology in every classroom, energy efficient with solar panels and geothermal wells, and house approximately 600 8th and 9th grade students. Milford High School consistently produces graduates who go on to post-secondary educational settings in either a two- or four-year college. With the new elementary school, Mispillion, opening for the 2011-2012 school year, this will bring a total of 7 schools within the Milford School District as we continue to grow to meet the needs of our expanding population.
Administrators, teachers, staff and all support personnel continually strive to ensure a quality instructional program led by research-based practices and innovative programming. Staff members maintain high expectations for their performance as well as for the quality of student work. Milford School District maintains a teaching staff that is highly qualified as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act. Milford School District Board of Education provides leadership and advocacy for policies supporting high quality education and communicates high expectations through its unwavering support.
Our District's technology program is updated frequently to meet the needs and the ever changing challenges of our fast paced, technological global society. Milford classrooms are well equipped with state of the art technology, smart boards, computers, other projection devices, and the latest in educational software.
Our motto, "Schools for the 21st Century", has special meaning as we provide cutting edge technology to our students and staff.
Come visit us and see why we are still the "best kept secret in Delaware".
